The title of this piece is "Emergency Room Doodles". One of the photos shows the pencil on notebook paper doodles that served as a distraction during a stressful 5 hour visit to the E.R. a few weeks ago. (My husband injured his thumb but is now on the mend.)
After the clay slab was smoothed and dried a bit I blended blue, white and yellow underglazes on the clay. The sgraffito designs were then scratched/carved through the underglaze, adapted from my doodles.
As the clay panel was drying (after the time-consuming sgraffito carving was done), the clay developed a crack in the lower left section. After patching it on the backside the front didn't look perfect. So I chose to add a zig zag line to the front design in the repaired area.
My husband's passion in life is providing tree branches to the animals at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. For mounting this wall hanging I re-used some of the tree branches after the giraffe had stripped the leaves and bark off.
